Dakota County Jury Convicts Stepfather in Death of 17-month-old Child and Life in Prison Sentence Imposed
[November 25, 2010]  Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Tylar James Hokanson, age 24 formerly of Northfield, was found guilty today by a Dakota County jury of two counts of Murder in the First Degree While Committing Child Abuse (involving Malicious Punishment and Neglect of a Child) and two counts Murder in the Second Degree While Committing a Felony (involving the two offenses listed above). The jury found Hokanson not guilty of Murder in the First Degree and Murder in the Second Degree while committing Assault. Hokanson was indicted by a Dakota County Grand Jury in October of 2009 with all of these offenses in connection with the death of his 17-month-old stepson Nicholas Arthur Miller who was injured on June 19, 2009 in Northfield and who died on June 23, 2009 in Wisconsin. The trial in this case lasted 2½ weeks and the jury deliberated for approximately 31 hours. Judge Robert King sentenced Hokanson to life in prison.
