Disasters, whether natural or man-made, can happen at any time. It is important that you, your family – and your pets – are prepared well ahead of any disaster. Your family should know how you will deal with your pets in an emergency. Take steps now to prepare for your pets' safety.
Organize supplies for your pet:
- Have sufficient supplies on hand, including food, water, medication and treats.
- Keep a copy of your pet’s inoculations, license, feeding schedule, and contact information for your veterinarian with your emergency supplies.
- Have handy a transport carrier and a leash or harness. Mark the carrier with your pet's name and your name, address, and phone number.
- Include a blanket for bedding and some favorite toys to reduce stress.
- Keep other supplies handy, such as litter box, bowls for food and water, manual can opener, trash bags, and bleach or other cleaning materials.
Identification for your pet:
- Put a photo of your pet with your emergency supplies in case you are separated and need to identify your pet.
- Make sure your pet is wearing an identification tag.
Boarding your pet in an emergency:
- In an emergency, most shelters will not accept pets - check with friends or relatives or your vet ahead of time to see if they can board your pet in an emergency.
- Contact your local animal humane shelter for more information regarding evacuation and pets.
- During a disaster, hotels may waive a no-pet policy. Call for a reservation as soon as you know it is needed.
- Keep a list of pet-friendly places with your emergency kit.
If you need to evacuate:
- If you do need to evacuate, take your pets with you to protect them - don’t leave them behind to an uncertain fate of injury or loss. You would not want your pet exposed to contaminated food or water.
- Do not chain them up, leaving them vulnerable to dangerous situations.
If you can shelter in your home:
- If you don’t have to evacuate and can wait out the disaster in your home, secure your pet in a safe area.
- Take time to identify the best location for you and your family and your pets before a disaster occurs.
If a disaster occurs when you are not at home:
- If you are leaving home for even a short time, talk with a neighbor or friend who can take care of your pet.
- Let them know where you will be and how they can reach you.
