Since 2004, Dakota County has been partnering with local utilities to save energy and money in traffic signals intersections. Traffic signals throughout the county have been changed from incandescent light bulbs to energy-efficient LED bulbs. The bulb changing initiative has resulted in:
- Saving over 700,000 kWh annually
- Reducing traffic signal energy costs by $50,000 annually
- Providing brighter lights at intersections
While LED bulbs are slightly more expensive in initial costs, extended warranties and the longer life of these energy efficient bulbs pay for themselves in less than a year of operation.
