Lace up those walking shoes
Sign up for Simple Steps today.Step up and step out this spring—start walking. For the fifth year, Dakota County is sponsoring a free walking program, Simple Steps. It’s a fun, easy way for people to improve their health.

Join a group or start your own. Groups can range in size from two to 12 people. Walk regularly and you’ll be eligible for prizes, including a Simple Steps reflective arm band, baseball cap, tote bag, and gift cards. The program runs through Aug. 31.

Register by visiting the Simple Steps website or by calling 651-554-6100. Registration is open through July 15.

Last year, nearly 1,200 Simple Steps participants walked for more than 2 million minutes—or more than 100,000 miles—and logged an additional 880,000 minutes of other physical activity.

To help you get started and stay motivated, access the Simple Steps Starter Kit online. It includes tips and resources, including maps of interesting places to walk and bike in the county and a tool to assess the “walkability” of your neighborhood.

New this year is a Simple Steps Facebook page where you can share ideas about favorite walking trails, discuss how you stay motivated, and learn about walking events in the county. Several parks in Dakota County will feature Simple Steps at events in May where people can sign up or get additional information about the program.

Simple Steps is funded by Dakota County and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota through its Prevention Minnesota initiative.
