Dispose of medication the safe way
Prescription DrugsThree new drop-off sites are now available for Dakota County residents to safely and easily dispose of unwanted, unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications.

The drop boxes are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the following locations:

Burnsville Police Department (lobby)
100 Civic Center Parkway
Burnsville

Hastings Sheriff’s Office (Drive-up box in front of Law Enforcement Center)
1580 Highway 55
Hastings

West St. Paul Police Department (lobby)
1616 Humboldt Avenue
West St. Paul

The drop-off sites are safe and anonymous. No ID is required and no questions will be asked.

Medications accepted include: capsules and pills, tablets, inhalers, patches, creams and gels, IV bags, powders, vials, blister packs, liquids, sprays, EpiPens and pet medicines.

Needles, sharps (except EpiPens) and fever thermometers are not accepted at the drop-boxes but can be safely disposed of at The Recycling Zone in Eagan. Medications from businesses are not accepted.

Here’s how to prepare medications for drop-off:

  • Keep medicines in their original container and place them in a sealed, clear plastic bag.
  • Cross out your name on medicine containers using a permanent marker.
  • Place medicine that is no longer in its original container in a clear plastic bag and write the name of the medicine on the bag.
More than 88 million people in the U.S. take an average of four prescription medications daily. The National Unused and Expired Medicine Registry estimates 40 percent of those prescription drugs go unused. Flushing medications down the toilet pollutes groundwater and is harmful to fish and wildlife. Disposing of medications properly reduces substance abuse, prevents inadvertent overdose or poisoning, and protects our groundwater.
