Dakota County holds the line on levy
On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners passed a resolution setting a limit of a zero percent increase for its 2012 property tax levy. Commissioners voted unanimously for the zero percent increase.
The state made significant changes in homeowner taxes for 2012 by replacing the longstanding Market Value Homestead Credit with a Market Value Homestead Exclusion. Under the Market Value Homestead Credit, tax payers received a credit against the market value of their property and Dakota County was reimbursed by the state the amount the homeowner saved. Even though Commissioners voted for no tax levy increase in 2012, the owner of a median-valued home will see, on average, a 3- to 4- percent increase in the county portion of their tax bill next year due to the state law change.
Dakota County is required to set the proposed property tax levy by Sept. 15 each year. The board is scheduled to adopt the final budget by Dec. 13, which is now limited to the zero percent levy increase passed on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The Board has a reputation for keeping property taxes low; in recent years, Dakota County has maintained the lowest county property tax rate in the state.
The Dakota County Administrator will present a recommended budget to the County Board on Nov. 1. County budget workshops are scheduled Nov. 1–4 with the Truth in Taxation hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Dakota County Board Room, Administration Center, 1590 Highway 55, Hastings. The adoption of the final 2012 budget and property tax levy is scheduled for Dec. 13.
