Un-decking the halls
You’ve unwrapped all the presents and dumped out all the stockings. So what do you do with your live Christmas tree when the fun’s over? Recycle it.
Garbage haulers offer tree pick-up service 1–3 weeks after Christmas, or you can bring it to a local compost site. For either option, make sure all lights, tinsel and ornaments are removed from the tree. Contact your garbage hauler for details or visit the Dakota County Recycling and Disposal Guide for more information.
Trees collected are typically composted, chipped for mulch or burned for fuel.
As you put holiday decorations away, don’t forget to recycle your unwanted Christmas lights. Bring broken or unwanted holiday lights and electrical cords—such as extension cords—to The Recycling Zone for free recycling through Jan. 15, 2011. For a list of other drop-off locations, visit Recycling Association of Minnesota.
