Getting a new lease on contaminated land
Learn about how brownfield redevelopment is helping to revitalize communities in Dakota County at a workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hastings City Hall, 101 Fourth Street, Hastings.
During the workshop, state and federal technical and financial assistance program experts will explain the resources available for environmental analysis and cleanup of brownfield properties. The workshop’s morning session includes a tour of the former HD Hudson Manufacturing site in Hastings. The City of Hastings is in the process of “repurposing” the site with financial and technical assistance from grants through the Dakota County Environmental Protection Agency and the Metropolitan Council Tax Based Revitalization Account. The afternoon session includes a panel of local city leaders and a brownfield developer who will discuss brownfield redevelopment projects in the area.
Brownfields are abandoned or underutilized property where real or perceived environmental contamination complicates redevelopment or expansion.
According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, brownfield redevelopment leveraged $3 billion in private investments in Minnesota from 1995 to 2010, and Minnesota DEED awarded $118 million to 275 brownfield cleanups—converting nearly 3,000 acres into useable property, adding $73 million to the local tax base, and creating or retaining over 33,000 jobs.
The workshop is open to Dakota County residents and city and county staff and officials. Come for all or part of the workshop. For more information or to sign-up, call Dakota County Water Resources at 952-891-7532. |
